Product detailed description
Microdrills for vias, through-hole components and other drilled features in PCB materials.
MIPEC Carbide Microdrills are designed for drilling small-diameter holes completely through PCB material. The range covers 0.2 to 3.0 mm in 0.1 mm increments.
PCB Drilling
PCB drilling creates holes for vias, through-hole components, connectors and other electrical or mechanical features.
Since the tool passes through the complete board thickness, MIPEC microdrills use the 38 mm through-material format.
Through Material = 38 mm
The drill passes through the PCB and into the supporting drill material below it.
Materials Beyond FR4
Solid-carbide microdrills are not limited to standard FR4. Carbide drilling tools are also used for other PCB laminate systems, including materials used for high-frequency and RF boards.
Different laminates can vary significantly in abrasiveness, reinforcement and mechanical behaviour. The appropriate drill geometry, spindle speed, feed rate and drilling strategy therefore depend on the specific material.
Choose the Drill for the Material
A drill that performs well in FR4 is not automatically the optimum choice for every PCB laminate. PTFE-, glass- and ceramic-filled materials may require different tooling and machining parameters.
Choose the Diameter for the PCB Feature
The required drill diameter depends on the PCB design and the intended function of the hole.
Where the design allows a larger drill, there is generally no advantage in selecting an unnecessarily small and more delicate tool.
Tool Life and Wear
There is no universal number of holes that determines the lifetime of a microdrill.
Tool life depends on PCB material, board thickness, drill diameter, machining parameters and the total number of holes drilled.
A Drill Does Not Have to Break to Be Worn Out
The practical end of drill life is reached when hole quality is no longer acceptable or consistent, even if the drill is still physically intact.
