Product detailed description
Flat-bottom cutting tools for larger-area surface machining, copper removal and shallow milled features.
MIPEC PCB Flat Endmills are solid-carbide cutting tools designed for surface machining. Unlike V-shaped isolation tools, a flat endmill removes material across the full working width of the cutter.
What Is a Flat Endmill Used For?
A flat endmill is used when material needs to be removed across a wider area rather than along a narrow isolation path.
Typical applications include copper clearing, shallow pockets and other surface-machining operations requiring a flat-bottomed cut.
Surface Machining = 36 mm
Flat endmills work on the surface rather than intentionally cutting through the complete material thickness.
Materials Beyond FR4
Solid-carbide endmills are used for machining many materials beyond standard FR4 PCB laminate. Carbide endmills are also used for high-frequency PCB laminates and, with suitable cutting geometry, for materials such as aluminium.
This does not mean that the same endmill should be used for every material. Different materials require different cutting geometries and machining parameters.
Select the Tool for the Material
FR4, PTFE-based laminates, ceramic-filled PCB materials and aluminium have very different machining characteristics. Tool geometry, spindle speed, feed rate and cutting depth should therefore be selected for the actual material being processed.
Flat Endmill or Isolation Milling Tool?
Isolation Milling Tool
Removes narrow paths around PCB tracks and pads.
Flat Endmill
Removes material across the full cutter width and is better suited to larger surface areas and flat-bottom features.
Choose the Diameter for the Required Geometry
Smaller endmills can reach narrower features, while larger diameters remove more material per pass where sufficient space is available.
The practical choice is therefore normally the largest diameter that still fits the geometry being machined.
Tool Life and Wear
Tool life depends on material, cutting depth, tool diameter, machining parameters and total machined distance or area.
Abrasive materials gradually wear carbide cutting edges.
A Tool Does Not Have to Break to Be Worn Out
Increasing burrs, rougher machined areas or deteriorating surface finish can indicate that replacement is required even if the tool remains physically intact.
